Perched high in the Caucasus Mountains at 2,200 metres above sea level, Quadrum Ski Resort is a modular marvel that defies conventional alpine architecture. Located in the growing ski town of Gudauri, Georgia, this boutique hotel is constructed entirely from repurposed shipping containers and exemplifies sustainable luxury in a rugged, high-altitude environment.

More than just a hotel, Quadrum is a design-forward statement that blends minimalism, mountain resilience, and modular innovation.

Build Method

Quadrum is constructed from stacked ISO shipping containers, each strategically positioned on the mountain’s steep slope in a cascading layout. This terraced arrangement follows the natural topography, allowing every unit uninterrupted views of the breathtaking valley below, while minimising the visual and environmental footprint on the landscape.

The steel containers were prefabricated and modified offsite, then transported to Gudauri and assembled on reinforced concrete and steel foundations that anchor the structure firmly in the mountainside. The entire complex is clad in timber slats, giving warmth and natural texture to the otherwise industrial exteriors while improving insulation.

Inside, each container unit is insulated and fitted out with Scandinavian-style interiors featuring plywood walls, soft finishes, and minimalist furniture. Floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the rooms with natural light and provides dramatic alpine views, creating a feeling of immersion in nature.

Sustainability was central to the build: the resort uses solar panels, low-energy lighting, and local water filtration and drainage systems to ensure environmental sensitivity at altitude.

Interbode Thoughts

Quadrum Ski Resort is a perfect case study in how modular architecture can excel even in the most extreme locations. From a construction perspective, it demonstrates how offsite fabrication and lightweight assembly can drastically reduce the disruption to natural landscapes—without compromising on style or durability.

We admire how this build turns the raw, industrial form of shipping containers into warm, contemporary alpine retreats. The terraced layout is not only functional but also elegant, with the timber cladding softening the harder edges of the containers and integrating beautifully into the rugged Georgian mountainscape.

This is cargotecture pushed to its limits—and thriving.
